CHAPTER 47
What the hell was that?â Cursing loudly, Stevie ran down the veranda steps. Nisa followed him into the underbrush, sweeping aside dead ferns and weeds.
âHer rabbit,â Nisa said breathlessly, slowing down at last, âthe crazy lady in the mobile home.â
âEvadne,â I snapped. âAnd sheâs not crazy, so stop saying that.â
Nisa shook her head. âItâs her familiar. Like in the play, only itâs a black hare, not a black dog.â
âItâs not her familiar.â Stevie returned to the driveway, brandishing a stick. âA familiar stays with whoever summons itâitâs a servant, or someone enslaved, like Caliban.â
âAn animal canât be enslaved,â said Amanda.
âA demon can,â retorted Stevie.
âLetâs not conflate theater and real life, Stephen.â
âDonât call me Stephen!â Stevieâs hand curled tighter around the stick.
Again I groaned and ran my hands through my hair. âEverybody, please stop. Itâs just a rabbit. Well, a hare. Thatâs all.â
Nisa stared at me, incredulous. âA hare that came down the chimney?â
The four of us stood and gazed into the woods. Finally, Nisa said, âMaybe Hill House really is haunted.â
âThat wasnât a ghost,â I insisted.
âOnly a demon,â said Stevie.
âNo, it wasnât.â Amanda straightened, turning to stare at the house. âI was staying with friends in Maine onceâthey had a cabin on Little Sebago. We started a fire in the fireplace and a burning duck flapped down onto the hearth. A mallard. Of course the poor thing died, butâ¦â She shrugged. âThings like this do happen.â
Nisa scowled. âDucks fly. And we saw that rabbit before. Remember, I took a picture of it in front of the trailer?â she went on, excited. âAnd then we didnât see the black rabbit or whatever it isâwe saw her. Evadne.â
I started to retort but stopped. She was right.
âBut how the hell did it get up there?â Stevie pointed at the chimneys atop Hill House, and everyone looked at me.
âListen to me.â I used the tone for wrangling unruly students back into their seats. âNo one was hurt, right?â
âExcept the hare,â Stevie said.
âIt was able to run off, Iâm sure itâs fine.â I squinted into the trees, praying I was right. âAnd I know that was weirdâokay, more than weirdâbut Ainsley said that animals get inside the house all the time.â
Both Nisa and Stevie looked like they were about to argue, when Amanda broke in. âCan we go back in? Iâm freezing. Also,â she added as she tromped up the steps to the door, âmaybe we could do what weâre ostensibly here to do?â
âAnd ignore what just happened?â demanded Nisa.
I shot Amanda a warning lookâNisa is of the Donât go to bed mad, stay up and fight school.
But Amanda just lifted her chin and smiled condescendingly. âDonât ignore it, dear Nisa. Use it.â
We trudged back into the house one by one, glancing around, and at each other, with disquiet. Yet Amanda was right. This was energy we all could work with. A black hare on fire, fleeing through the living roomâ¦
Immediately I began planning how to write it into the play. I was so absorbed I took a wrong turn, and wandered down an unfamiliar corridor.
